Club Tropicana is everything you expect an 80s-set musical to be… bold, bright, and cheesier than a cheese fondue on steroids.
What it delivers in just as much excess as the fromage is hit after hit performed by a talented cast who relish big song and dance numbers.
Fantastic Day, She Drives Me Crazy, Only You, Jump… the smashes kept coming (although not Club Tropicana, go figure).
A stand out was Take On Me as a duet by the star-crossed lovers played by Karina Hind and Cellen Chugg Jones.
Centre of attention though were Joe McElderry, gleeful and in fine voice as outrageous holiday rep Garry, and Kate Robbins, putting her skills as a comedian, impressionist and singer to good use as hotel maid Consuela.
But the songs aren’t the only things out of the 80s.
The script could have been a dusted down lame Hi-De-Hi episode, where foreign is funny, camp is hysterical and toilet humour positively side-splitting.
Still if you can embrace it, you’ll enjoy the party.
The cheering HMT audience last night did.
