Fans of music, theatre and the arts are in for a very Happy New Year in 2019.
The next 12 months are packed with some of the biggest names in showbiz – from Rod Stewart to Sir Ian McKellen; the best West End shows – like Calendar Girls; top bands – including Little Mix and The Vamps – and so much more across Granite City venues from His Majesty’s Theatre (HMT) to the AECC.
HMT is wasting no time in getting things off to a glittering start when Strictly Come Dancing’s newly-crowned champion, Kevin Clifton, stars in Rock Of Ages from January 28.
And West End hits keep coming with Gary Barlow and Tim Firth’s Calendar Girls from February 19 to March 2, followed by the spectacular revival of Doctor Dolittle, starring Mark Williams, from March 12 to 23.
The show tunes continue in April with Kinky Boots, on a two-week run from April 23, then Madagascar The Musical from June 12 to 16.
Local talent gets in on the act too, with Shrek the Musical presented by AOC Productions from July 3 to 6.
Other musical highlights include Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat from September 10, Little Miss Sunshine from September 17, Annie from September 24, and Cabaret from November 12.
HMT’s drama strand is also a hit, with Benidorm Live arriving from March 4 and Art (with a cast of Stephen Tompkinson, Denis Lawson and Nigel Havers) from March 25. One of the most anticipated shows is Rain Man, arriving on April 1, plus the return of To Kill A Mockingbird on June 3.
Dance fans can look forward to Scottish Ballet’s Cinderella from January 16 to 19. Family audiences are well catered for with Zog in July, Milkshake Live in August and the always popular panto returning on November 30 with Cinderella.
Meanwhile, the revamped Music Hall offers a true box of delights for 2019.
Peter Andre celebrates 25 years of touring on February 11 and Embrace marks the 21st anniversary of album The Good Will Out on March 5.
KT Tunstall brings her sell-out tour to the venue on March 8, while Heather Small performs on May 17 and Beverley Knight on June 8.
Comedy is in the mix with Nish Kumar on February 7, Jason Manford on March 23, Paul Merton’s Impro Chums on May 18, Reginald D Hunter on June 1 and Rhod Gilbert on June 22.
Highlights of the classical season include Sir Bryn Terfel in recital on February 9 and the RSNO playing the music of Harry Potter on March 14.
The iconic Tivoli has some stunning offerings for 2019. Chief among these is a special evening with Sir Ian McKellen on August 14 – which sold out within minutes.
Over at the AECC and TECA there are some huge draws including Disney On Ice from March 20 to 24, Olly Murs on May 1, The Vamps on May 10, Bill Bailey on June 1 and Rod Stewart (in a purpose-built outdoor arena at the Bridge of Don venue).
