Everything was big in the 80s…big hair, big hits, big films and Flashdance delivered them in one package.
Flashdance: The Musical is still delivering big, with big songs, big dance numbers and big names in stars Joanne Clifton and Ben Adams.
The only thing small is the story – a slight confection about underdog Alex, pipe fitter and exotic dancer, following her dream of being a ballerina.
But no one is looking for Hamlet. They want the hits from the movie and some great dancing. That’s exactly what they got. Gloria, Maniac and Flashdance…What A Feeling all delivered with style against a backdrop of standout choreography, slick staging and some great 80s costumes.
The music is good, too. The Here And Now love duet between Joanne’s feisty Alex and Ben’s principled Nick is a beautiful moment.
Clearly Joanne can dance (Strictly winner anyone?) but she’s no slouch on the vocals, matching Ben (of A1 boyband fame) on the singing front.
By the time the story got to the finale, the audience were up, clapping and singing. What a feeling, indeed.
