North-east audiences counting down to Dolly Parton’s musical’s arrival

A West End show created by one of the biggest names in music is set to arrive in the north-east for a five-night run.
Dolly Parton’s musical 9 to 5, an adaptation of the film of the same name, will visit His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen in October, with casting set to be announced in the coming months.
The show features a book by Patricia Resnick, the 1980 film’s original screenwriter, and an original Oscar, Grammy and Tony award-nominated score written by country and pop music legend Parton.
The Islands In The Stream singer, 73, first saw the film adapted for stage in 2007, the first performances taking place on Broadway in April of the following year.
In 9 to 5: The Musical audiences follow the story of three women – Doralee, Violet and Judy – who are all workmates pushed to boiling point by their sexist and egotistical boss.
The plot revolves around their plan to concoct a scheme to kidnap and turn the tables on their despicable supervisor.
Will the women manage to reform their office or will events unravel when the CEO pays an unexpected visit?
Inspired by the cult film of the same name, the show has toured in the US and is currently playing to sell-out audiences in London’s West End.
Aberdeen Performing Arts’ director of programming and creative projects Ben Torrie said audiences can expect an evening filled with laughter.
He said: “Coming direct from the West End, 9 to 5: The Musical has all the ingredients for a guaranteed hilarious, fun night out for HMT audiences. It’s a cult classic with a tremendous soundtrack and a real highlight of our new season.”
In a five-date run, 9 to 5: The Musical will play at His Majesty’s Theatre from Tuesday October 22 until Saturday October 26.
Tickets go on sale to APA Friends on Wednesday and on will be general sale on Friday, and are available from www.aberdeenperformingarts.com, in person at the box office at His Majesty’s Theatre, Music Hall or Lemon Tree or by calling 01224 641122.
