An Aberdeen-based student from Luxembourg has released a single recorded in Berlin – with a video filmed in the Granite City.

Pop-soul singer Hugo One, 21, self-penned I Love You which is out now on digital platforms like Spotify.

The independently-released single is accompanied by a promotional video which takes in various Aberdeen locations and has a twist at the end.

Currently in his third year of a business degree at Aberdeen University, Hugo ultimately hopes to release an album and land a record deal.

Written when Hugo was in the early stages of a relationship, he believes I Love You explores universal themes that can connect with everyone.

He said: “I wrote I Love You back when I was in a relationship.

“It is about the time I fell in love with that person.

“However I feel like it can relate to everyone as it is a love song.

“It can be about anyone’s girlfriend, boyfriend, husband or wife – anyone.”

The single is accompanied by a video featuring Hugo’s friend, local actress Amelie Bonnet, which was filmed over two hectic days in the Granite City.

“The video was shot in various places in Aberdeen such as the beach, Codonas, ATIK Aberdeen and the University of Aberdeen campus,” he said.

“You see someone behind the camera falling in love with a young woman.

“However, you don’t actually see the person that is falling in love with her.

“You don’t know if it is someone young or old, or if it is a man or a woman.

“You get the surprise only at the end.

“We took two days to film the video and it was an intense period of shooting.

“There was a lot of wind at the beach and there were a few scenes where the main actress (Amelie) was sometimes cold.”

Originally from Luxembourg City, Hugo set up a YouTube channel as a teenager on which he would perform cover versions of his favourite songs.

He made a number of those covers available on Spotify before taking the leap of releasing I Love You.

“The song I Love You was written and recorded in Berlin,” he said.

“I was on Erasmus (the European Union student exchange programme) last year in Germany and that was when I had the time to focus on my music and write more.

“It was recorded and written in Berlin in my friend Tobias Siege’s studio.

“I wrote the song, the lyrics and melody and Tobias was there to help me with all the arrangements and the mastering.”

Through independently releasing songs on Spotify and other digital mediums Hugo is gradually growing a fanbase.

Although that route offers complete autonomy ultimately he aims to secure the backing of a record label.

He said: “It is everyone’s dream when they are a singer to have an album released.

“That is my goal and to also get signed to a record label and hopefully do well.”

As for the singer-songwriter’s influence they embrace multiple genres and artists from jazz to modern R‘n’B.

He said: “I grew up listening to music such as Michael Jackson, George Michael and Stevie Wonder.

“My style is pop with some jazz in there, as I love all the instrumentals from jazz.

“However I am very much influenced by today’s music as well such as Beyonce and Khalid.”

Hugo will continue to balance his musical career with studying full-time at Aberdeen University.

“It is difficult to do both and a lot of hard work but I am really happy to do it,” he said.

“I was lucky enough last year when I was in Germany that I was doing an internship so I had a lot of free time.

“Now that I am back in Aberdeen and it all has to balance with university.”
