West End sensation The Book Of Mormon broke box office records within 24 hours of going on sale.
Bosses at Aberdeen Performing Arts announced tickets for the musical were flying out the door as they unveiled a raft of new shows heading for both His Majesty’s Theatre and the Music Hall.
Ben Torrie, director of programming and creative projects for APA, said: “Within 24 hours of going on sale, over 5,600 Book Of Mormon tickets were sold through our box office, which is a phenomenal number, and it’s almost certainly a record for us.
“This show has such a huge following and is selling really fast so we would recommend getting your tickets soon to avoid disappointment!”
The multi-award-winning show, which has sold out every night of its West End run, went on sale this week after a campaign of teaser posters and online posts.
The Book Of Mormon is now being joined at HMT by some glittering new shows for the coming season, ranging from blockbusters to iconic musicals, family favourites and outstanding comedians.
Announced in APA’s new brochure, they include first-time visits to Aberdeen for The Addams Family, Friendsical – a musical parody of Friends, as well as a return for the hugely popular Mamma Mia! and Footloose.
Ben said: “2020 will absolutely prove that HMT is the true home of the West End in the north-east with some of the biggest musicals ever created gracing the stage.
“These join a season which already includes fantastic hit shows such as We Will Rock You, Once and Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.
“These sit alongside top-quality work from Scotland and Aberdeen with Scottish Ballet’s new season, Oor Wullie from Dundee Rep and a series of local amateur productions kicking off with the 99th annual student show.”
The Addams Family will run from September 1 to 5, featuring the kooky family in a new musical adventure.
Friendsical, inspired by the cult TV show and featuring original new songs will be on from July 9 to 11.
ABBA-inspired Mamma Mia! will have fans dancing in the aisles from September 22 to October 3, with Footloose getting toes tapping from June 5 to 13.
Dance fans are in for a treat with Scottish Ballet’s new season, including Swan Lake and the Nutcracker.
And, even before the curtain goes up on Cinderella later this month, next year’s HMT panto will be Beauty And The Beast.
Meanwhile, the Music Hall also has some big-name attractions heading its way, including the BBC Big Band performing The Music Of James Bond… and Beyond on February 9.
Comedy is well served, too, with Last Leg star Josh Widdecombe on January 26 and Rob Beckett on June 5.
Strictly fans will be delighted to see a strand of shows from favourites like Anton and Erin and Aljaz and Janette.
Ben said: “The Music Hall has established itself as a top-class venue once again with a diverse programme of quality performance from rock legends to emerging superstars, fabulous symphony orchestras to intimate roots gigs and some of the most popular stars performing today.
“There is no better place to see great music and comedy and 2020 is off to a brilliant start with this new season.”
